Throwdown HQ- Las Vegas, NV
Day 2 of Throwdown Fight Camp started bright and early on Sunday at 8am with Mike Springer giving a strength and conditioning for combat athlete training session for the campers. With an early start and conditioning as the first session of the day there were a few camper “no shows”, maybe they “explored” the Vegas nightlife the night before? Either way, Springer gave a great session which incorporated kettle bells and body weight exercises and the campers took away information that can help them create their own home programs.
2007 ADCC Absolute Champion Robert Drysdale taught the day session and showed the class effective no-gi techniques such as attacks from the back, escape/defense from back attacks, variations of the “brabo” choke, different leg locks/knee bars and sweeps of all types. Campers tested their newly learned arsenal of each other and then had a chance to test it on Drysdale himself. Well kind of, Drysdale played with the campers like a cat plays with a mouse but it was still an experience to be able to roll with the 07 ADCC Absolute Champion.
IFL head coach & striking guru, Shawn Tompkins taught the afternoon session and showed the campers stand up techniques that have helped athletes such as Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron and Sam Stout be successful in competition. XC BJJ coach & MMA/ADCC vet Jay White joined the session and gave the campers his BJJ for MMA lesson going over taking the back from half guard, defending yourself while your in opponents guard and other effective techniques that he uses with the pros at XC.
After two days the campers were exhausted but will take home a wealth of knowledge that they can apply to their own training. Matt A. from Portland said- “The camp was awesome! The hours were long especially the 8 hour day but the awesome coaches and fighters and different techniques and philosophies I learned will definitely help my game and put me on the right path.”
Thank you to all of the instructors for sharing their knowledge and thank you to the campers for attending this amazing camp!
